at Bloomington, Md., May 21, 1853; Removed to Preston Co., W. Va., 1858.
Educated in Public Schools. Worked in Cooper Shop and Clerk in Country
Store; Studied at night; became Editor Preston Journal, 1873; Elected State
Senate, 1880; Reelected 1884; 12 years Chairman Republican State Committee;
Secretary of State 1896 - 1900 - 1904; Elected Governor of W. Va. 1904.
Present Incumbent. Republican. Member of Presbyterian Church.
